Whitney Elementary January Projects in the Highly Capable Program

Whitney Elementary highly capable students have had the opportunity to focus on STEAM skills during the 2020-21 school year.  While we are in distance learning, our 3rd – 5th grade students are focusing on 3D modeling and design as well as programming and coding skills.  Students learn these skills during bi-weekly or monthly challenges through Google Classroom and TinkerCAD.  After learning the basics of 3D modeling, January’s challenge was the students’ choice.  They were able to select from a range of ideas which included creating emoji keychains to creating characters from their favorite game or show.  If they completed the challenge their model was then 3D printed using our in-house printer.  Students then could pick up their models at our weekly library checkout and drive-through.

The blue model pictured is Stitch from the movie Lilo and Stitch and was created by one of our Whitney 5th grade students.  The white model is a modified Pikachu from the game/show Pokemon, and was created by one of our Whitney 4th grade students.
