Migrant Program Spotlight

The YSD Migrant Program plans to share our activities with you during this 2021-2022 school year.  Our hope is you will learn more about who we are and what we do.  We will share some of the barriers migrant students face each day, activities the student advocate’s support and services provided to migrant families and students.

Meet Student Advocate Maribel Mendoza and our 5th grade migrant students from Garfield Elementary.

Maribel meets with students during lunch to build relationships that allows them to feel connected and cared for while at school.

Both boys shared about their new puppy and how he likes to destroy things.  The new puppy even broke the student’s reading glasses.  Maribel contacted Mom and learned he has a second pair.

The reason for Maribel’s phone call to mom was because the migrant program provides health services for migrant students who cannot afford to purchase needed glasses.  The goal of the program is to remove barriers which may hinder student’s academic success.
